Ignacio Cuerva, CEO of the energy company, participated in the round table discussion on Renewable Energy Generation at a meeting in Madrid that brought together the main players in the sector in Spain.
Granada. 12/09/2025. The Granada-based energy company Cuerva participated once again in the 10th Energy Forum organised by elEconomista, held on 10 and 11 September in Madrid, which has now established itself as one of the leading events for the Spanish and European energy industry.
Specifically, the head of the energy company participated in the round table on Renewable Energy Generation, where he took part in an interesting debate alongside executives from Atlántica, BNZ, Magnon, RES, RIC Energy and X-ELIO, moderated by Rubén Esteller, deputy director of elEconomista.
During the meeting, Ignacio Cuerva shared his vision of the challenges and opportunities of the energy transition, emphasising several strategic pillars: the need to increase demand to balance the entry of renewables into the system, progress in the electrification of the economy, and the acceleration of energy storage deployment to ensure stability and flexibility in the grid.
Ensuring the safety and competitiveness of the system
During his speech, Cuerva recalled that, ‘although Spain is making progress in renewable energy generation, planning and regulation remain decisive factors’.

“Last April's zero energy supply highlighted the need to anticipate risks. At Cuerva, we produce detailed reports to analyse the impact and continue to improve security of supply. The resilience of the system depends on coordination between generation, demand and storage“.
He also stressed the importance of adapting the system to changing demand, especially with the emergence of new players such as data centres, which require a constant supply of electricity:
“It is not just a matter of installing more renewables, but of understanding how demand is evolving and how to efficiently integrate these new consumers into the system. The demand exists, but it must be concentrated in industry, the electrification of processes, homes and transport. Only then will we truly address the challenges of the energy transition, rather than resorting to more simplistic approaches.”
The urgency of freeing up capacity and digitising networks
Ignacio Cuerva stressed that one of the major challenges is to free up capacity in those provinces where electrical nodes are blocked, which slows down project development and the entry of new demand.
“The solutions are neither unique nor easy; if they were, we would not all be here. If capacity is blocked and does not translate into more demand, something is wrong. From the point of view of renewables, we need someone to open the door for us to access this new demand and facilitate the entry of projects”.
The Granada-based executive insisted that distributors, together with the government and the regulator, must play a decisive role in this process by establishing clear and realistic rules. In this regard, he warned about the lack of an explicit call for network expansion:
“It is worrying that there is unanimous consensus in the sector that, with what is currently on the table, the future of networks does not involve real expansion. The first sign should be precisely that: freeing up capacity not only through new infrastructure, but also through more efficient management and the digitisation of networks. This is the major element of change in the system, which is still not being discussed enough”.
Cuerva's commitment to innovation and sustainability
Cuerva's participation in the forum reaffirms its long-standing commitment to innovation and sustainability in order to promote a more efficient and resilient energy model. With more than 85 years of experience in the sector, the company continues to focus on solutions that go beyond energy, integrating renewable generation, network digitalisation and energy storage, guaranteeing a reliable and competitive supply, with the aim of creating value for society and industry.
A key forum for the future of energy
The 10th Energy Forum organised by elEconomista brought together the sector's leading figures, reinforcing the need for a robust, regulated and competitive electricity system.
Once again, Cuerva reaffirms its role as an energy ecosystem that combines knowledge, proximity and innovation, actively contributing to the construction of a more robust electricity system that is prepared for the challenges of the energy transition.
