Cuerva is committed to progress in fusion energy through ICFRM-21
The electric company is a Silver sponsor of the 21st International Conference on Fusion Reactor Materials (ICFRM-21) that took place from 22 to 27 October in Granada.
More than 500 congresspeople from 35 countries will meet in the Palacio de Congresos in Granada motivated by the construction of IFMIF-DONES.
Granada. 23/10/2023. From 22 to 27 October, Cuerva will be Silver sponsor in the 21st International Conference on Fusion Reactor Materials (ICFRM-21) that takes place in Granada. This event, which attracts outstanding experts and professionals from the fusion energy field, promises to be an exceptional showcase for the advances made in research and development of forefront materials.
The opening ceremony of the ICFRM-21 took place on Monday 23 at 9:00. In this ceremony, Angel Ibarra and María José Caturla, Conference Chairs; Eberhard Diegele, Chair International Advisory Committee; Nieves Valenzuela, General Director of Promotion of innovation of the Junta de Andalucía; Raquel Yotti, General Secretary of Investigation from the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación; Marifrán Carazo, mayor of Granada; and Tony Donné, Programme Manager from EUROfusion intervened. Other regional and local authorities have also attended the event.
ICFRM-21 will gather the principal specialists, scientists, engineers, companies and public organisms that work tirelessly in the study, development and characterization of materials crucial to fusion energy. This event will allow the exchange of knowledge, the presentation of cutting-edge research and the establishment of collaboration nets to promote fusion technology towards the future.
The conference will also bring exceptional opportunities to establish connections with other industry leaders and promote technological advances.
The fusion materials, a central topic in the congress, is an issue with which Spain and, more specifically, Granada are very compromised due to the construction of the project IFMIF-DONES, making this city an international referent.
The construction in Granada of the IFMIF-DONES has been one of the main motivators behind hosting this relevant encounter in this city. The prominent role that Spain has in the development of fusion energy will increase until the country becomes an absolute global reference with the particle accelerator in Escúzar (Granada).
The goal of this installation, the largest scientific and technologic infrastructure in Spain, is the development and qualification of materials able to withstand the extreme conditions that the first wall of the future fusion reactors will be exposed to.
Despite functioning from 2023 on, Cuerva is already administering energy to the region while working in optimizing the infrastructure.
Within the week-long ICFRM-21 celebration, and despite not belonging to the convention program itself, the second meeting of the DONES Steering Committee will take place on October 26. This is the highest government body where the high level decisions that affect IFMIF-DONES are taken. To this meeting, the 17 countries that are part of the Committee will attend, as well as European institutions such as EURATOM, EUROfusion and F4E.
